金墉1959年12月^[5]8日出生於韓國首爾，5歲時隨父母移民至美國愛荷華州的Muscatine。他的父親於愛荷華大學任教牙醫學，而他的母親則取得了哲學博士學位。金墉高中畢業後，只在愛荷華大學讀了一年半，然後轉往布朗大學就讀，並於1982年取得文學士。1991年，從哈佛醫學院取得醫科博士；1993年於哈佛大學得到人類學系的博士^[6]。他是非營利機構「衛生夥伴組織」創始人之一，曾出任世界衛生組織總幹事顧問，2004年至2006年任世衛組織愛滋病防治部門主管。2009年7月，他出任達特茅斯學院校長，成為美國常青藤聯盟院校首位亞裔校長。^[7]
