Microsoft board members decided that Bill Gates needed to step down from its board in 2020 as they pursued an investigation into the billionaire’s prior romantic relationship with a female Microsoft employee that was deemed inappropriate. His spokeswoman said the matter was unrelated to his decision to resign.

(德國之聲) 微軟創辦人、億萬富翁暨慈善家比爾·蓋茨(Bill Gates) 拿出一罐深色物體,放在他身旁的講台上。“你可能正在猜這是什麼。沒錯,這是人類的排泄物。”
週二(11月6日),他在北京出席未來廁所論壇時說:“這小小一罐糞便,就含有200兆個輪狀病毒、200億個志賀氏菌、10萬個寄生蟲卵。 ”他說,每年至少有55個五歲以下的孩童死於這些病毒引發的疾病。“在沒有公共衛生系統的社會,這些都是孩子們出外玩耍的時後,隨時可以接觸得到的。這也是為什麼,馬桶已經不再只是生活品質的問題,而是疾病、營養不良、攸關生死的問題。”

比爾蓋茨與妻子共同創辦的比爾梅琳達蓋茨基金會從2011年起投資2億美金,刺激衛生設施的相關研究與發展。今年,他們更在北京舉辦為期三日的“未來廁所論壇”,邀請二十多家公司和學術機構與會,展示創新的廁所科技,包括不使用下水道的馬桶、小型可發電污水處理設備(Omni Processor )。
聯合國兒童基金會估計,全世界有45億人沒有安全可靠的公共衛生系統,這也導致每年有48萬名五歲以下的孩童死於痢疾,主要在南亞和薩哈拉非洲。根據劍橋經濟學院與日本馬桶製造商儷住(Lixil) 做的研究報告,光是2015年,人類因為沒有公共衛生系統而付出的成本高達2230億美元。
