（中央社記者曾依璇巴黎30日專電）法國政壇的女性標竿人物維爾今天逝世。她在法國和歐洲都享有崇高評價，最為人所知的是在擔任衛生部長期間，發表歷史性演說，促成墮胎除罪化。
維爾生於1927年，她於法國時間今早逝世於巴黎自宅，享壽89歲。
維爾身為猶太人，曾於1944年、她16歲時與家人一起被送進集中營，最後只有她與姊妹倖存，雙親及哥哥則不幸喪命。對法國人來說，維爾代表了一個納粹統治下倖存的象徵記憶。
1974年，時任總統的季斯卡Valery Giscard d’Estaing任命席哈克Jacques Chirac為總理，延攬維爾為當時唯一的女性部長，執掌衛生部。
在她擔任部長期間，最重要也最艱難的一役，就是為女性爭取墮胎除罪化。
她在幾乎全由男性議員組成的國民議會前，發表了一項名留青史的演說，促成國會辯論3天，最終通過墮胎法案。
在演說中，維爾表示，「沒有任何一個女人是打從心裡樂於墮胎的，墮胎永遠是一種悲劇」，墮胎是一種特殊狀況，是在無路可走的條件下才能採用的辦法，但法律仍應把墮胎除罪化，讓走投無路的女性不須痛苦地求助於非法墮胎。
維爾採親歐立場，曾任歐洲議會議長，並於2008年獲任為法蘭西學院Academie Francaise院士，是歷來第6位獲任為院士的女性。
獲任為法蘭西學院院士是一項極高榮譽，且為終身職，一名院士逝世後才會再遴選一名遞補，一般又稱院士為「不朽者」immortel。
維爾曾說，「對我而言，我很早就超脫了永垂不朽的想法，畢竟我在集中營裡，就已死去了一些」。

Simone Veil, a champion of the struggle for women's rights and the construction of Europe, has died today aged 89. Former French Minister, Veil was a witness of the 20th century and of the tragedy of the Holocaust. She tirelessly promoted historic knowledge as a bulwark against the persistent daemons of racism and anti-Semitism. A woman of strong convictions, she served as minister in several French governments initiating major advances for the rights of women, for which we are indebted. Veil grew to become a universal figure and model for millions of men and women around the world. Her immense legacy will not be forgotten.

Jan Morris, CBE, FRSL (born James Humphrey Morris, 2 October 1926) is a Welshhistorian, author and travel writer. In an BBC2 Artsnight interview on 8 October 2016 she told Michael Palin that she does not like to be described as a travel writer, as her books are not about movement and journeys; they are about places and people.[1] She is known particularly for the Pax Britannica trilogy (1968–1978), a history of the British Empire, and for portraits of cities, notably Oxford, Venice, Trieste, Hong Kong, and New York City.
Born in England of an English mother and Welsh father, Morris was educated at Lancing College, West Sussex, and Christ Church, Oxford, and considers herself Welsh. A trans woman, she was published under her birth name until 1972, when she transitioned from living as male to living as female.
